Caporal defeats Zhang at RUFF 3, Jumabieke and Wang stay perfect
Chongqing, CHINA –On heels of the RUFF Million RMB Super Fight announcement, lightweight Rodrigo Caporal secured a majority decision victory over Zhang LiPeng, 28-28, 29-28, 29-28, at RUFF 3,to move one step closer to becoming China’s first MMA national champion.
Taking what was later named the “Ranik Fight of the Night” to the ground in the first two rounds, Caporal nullified Zhang’s striking edge with textbook rear mounts, but was unsuccessful on several rear naked choke attempts, needing the full 15 minutes to earn the win, upping his record inside the RUFF cage to 2-0 in the process.
“I tried for the choke, but every time he slipped [out],” explained Caporal. “He’s very strong, good at defending Jiu Jitsu. I tried to finish, but didn’t.”
Caporal’s teammate, Irshaad Sayed, fought an equally impressive match against undefeated bantamweight Jumabieke Tuerxun in the co-main event, but ended up on the losing side of a 29-27, 29-27, 27-29, split decision.
While Sayed landed a number of significant strikes during the three-round contest, Tuerxun dominated the ground, taking Sayed down, and controlling much of the match from the guard position.
“He didn’t damage me when I was on the floor, but I spent too much time on my back and that gave him the decision,” commented Sayed. “It was a good fight. I’m a bit disappointed to be honest, but I know he won.”
Sayed’s record inside the RUFF cage now stands at 1-1, while Tuerxun improves to 3-0, and is making a strong case to fight for the RUFF belt and the RMB 1-million prize next January.
Featherweight Wang Guan also notched his third RUFF win, needing all of 3:05 to finish Jiang ZhouWen in his first bout in the 66kg division. Wang landed a brutal right directly on Jiang’s eye, following up with a series of hammer fists before referee Jerin Valel ruled the contest a T.K.O. via punches.
Four of Wang’s teammates from Xi’An Sports University also walked away with victories at RUFF 3,as Ta Yier, Yang Liang and HasiTieer TeerJiang all earned their first wins inside the RUFF cage, and bantamweight Ayideng Jumayi delivered a picturesque cross to A Qiao’s head, knocking the Thai competitor out cold in 70 seconds, earning the “Ducati Knockout of the Night.”
“Each one of the fighters tonight put on such a great performance tonight,” added RUFF founder Joel Resnick. “They’re real champions, great athletes, and I’m proud of all of them.”
RUFF veteran Liu PingYuan finally secured his first win inside the cage, submitting bantamweight Liu LianJie via armbar at 4:31 in round one, while featherweight Ji Xian looked impressive in his RUFF debut, defeating Xue GuoBin and winning the “Ranik Submission of the night” with an armbar at 1:19 in round one.
RUFF 3,the first official fight in the year-long road to the Super Fight, was a solid showing for the Shanghai-based MMA promotion, who will now add the 57kg flyweight division beginning with RUFF 4.
